Damselfish - Natural History & Ceramics Painting Masterclass - 9 May
Please join us for an intimate and hands-on natural history and ceramics painting class where you will learn how to paint two species of Damselfish: the Ocellate Damselfish (Pomacentrus vaiuli) and Blacktail Humbug (Dascyllus melanurus) on dessert plates.
This masterclass is part of our series where a marine biologist/ecologist will be in attendance and for this session we will be welcoming Dr. Ariel Pezner to our Coconut Crab studio again.
Damselfish come from a diverse family of fish, called Pomacentridae, encompassing more than 250 species including clownfish. Damselfish are common on reefs worldwide and many snorkelers and divers know them well as tiny but mighty - as they can be quite aggressive and territorial! They also are known as the “farmers of the reef” as they maintain carefully curated algae patches that help corals grow and thrive
Dr. Ariel Pezner’s background focuses on ocean chemistry and oceanography, with particular emphasis on coral reefs. Her work often involves lots of field work snorkelling or diving, and has taken her across the world, from Taiwan, to Japan, Belize, and Australia where she has often encountered Damselfish. She will share more about their role on the reef, and current threats to their survival, during the class.
Participants will be given two Casa Adams dessert plates bisqued, with the Damselfish already monoprinted and ready to be painted. When fired, they will measure 16cm across and 2.5cm high. During the class, Araceli will share all the tricks and techniques she has mastered over the 14 years + she has been making and painting ceramics. All materials, including tea/coffee and yummy biscuits from the local Greek patisserie are included. The plates will be glazed and fired in the studio and ready for collection approximately one week after. No previous experience needed!
Timings: 9am to 12pm
Location: The address will be given to confirmed participants closer to the date
