Yellowbanded Wirrah- Natural History & Ceramics Painting Masterclass - 27 June
Please join us for an intimate and hands-on natural history and ceramics painting class where you will learn how to paint a Yellowbanded Wirrah (Acanthistius cinctus) with underglazes (ie the “paints” applied under the glaze).
This masterclass is part of our series where a marine biologist/ecologist will be in attendance and for this session we will be welcoming Younis Menkara, an ichthyologist and PhD candidate at the University of Sydney and Australian Museum studying the systematics of Wirrahs. His research explores how Wirrahs are related to each other and to other related fishes. He is also passionate about connecting scientists with the wider community through citizen science platforms and by working with recreational angler.
The Yellowbanded Wirrah is a stunning species of Wirrah distributed commonly on Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island, the Kermedec Islands, and rarely in northern New Zealand. It is also extremely rare on the coastline of eastern Australia, with the last verified observation from 2009. It is characterised by its striking colouration, sporting bold black and yellow bands, and usually inhabits rocky reefs. Its rarity on the east coast of Australia raises questions about its conservation and management.
Participants will be given one of Casa Adams signature medium platters bisqued, with the species already monoprinted and ready to be painted. During the class, Araceli will share all the tricks and techniques she has mastered over the 14 years + she has been making and painting ceramics. All materials, including tea/coffee and yummy biscuits from the local Greek patisserie are included. The platters will be glazed and fired in the studio and ready for collection approximately one week after. No previous experience needed!
Timings: 9am to 12pm
Location: The studio address will be given to confirmed participants closer to the date.
***If you’d like to paint the species on a dinner plate instead, there is an additional charge of $25. Just add this class to your cart and then add Dinner plate option for painting class to your cart as well.***
