This large round platter depicts a Coconut Crab (Birgus latro). It is the largest land crab and is found on islands across the Indian and Central Pacific Oceans. According to a study by the University of Hawaii, the Coconut Crab can take a coconut from the ground, climb up a tree 10m high and drop it to access the coconut flesh inside. To watch a short video by Australian Geographic about Coconut Crabs (which we call Robber Crabs), click here.

The platter is handmade with Australian porcelain and hand painted with watercolour-like underglazes. As with all handmade objects, it may have some irregularities which contribute to its unique nature. It is fully functional and can we washed in the dishwasher, though I would recommend not putting in the microwave or oven as the abrupt changes in temperature might crack the clay.

The platter has a 37cm diameter and is 3cm high. Given its large size, picking up directly from the studio is highly recommended if you are local to Sydney. This is a listing for the product in the picture.

By purchasing this item, we will contribute to Regenerate Australia’s carbon sequestration projects by planting one native tree or shrub in Australia.

If you are local to Sydney, you can come and collect from our studio. Just use the code INNERWEST at checkout and we can natter the details over email.
