The Casa Adams marbled ceramics are decorated with a technique we have developed based on the traditional approaches used in book binding for centuries.
Marbled paper originated in Japan around the 9th century (called Suminagashi). The technique was exported to Türkiye and later to northern Italy, spreading through Europe via the Silk Road. There, marbled papers became commonly used as end-papers in valuable books, including in the 18th century natural history books that have inspired Casa Adams’ hand-painted works depicting the natural world.
This marbled platter has been decorated using the Antique Dutch pattern, which was first made in the late 16th century and widely used in the late 17th to the early 19th centuries. Given the way we transfer the marbled design on to the ceramics, the bottoms are also marbled in the process. Each platter is completely unique as it is impossible to repeat the exact same marbled pattern.
The ceramics we marble are made of high-fired Australian stoneware and produced using a ram press. They are made by an Australian family-owned and run production studio which has been operating for over 50 years. When the pieces are bisque fired, they are shipped to our studio, where they are meticulously hand marbled, glazed and fired, making them completely food safe, dishwasher friendly and built to last. In fact, given the way they are made, our marbled ceramics are hospitality-grade.
